NSPAHA General Volunteer Information Why volunteer?
by Deb Hellquist
Hockey is a great way to get involved in your community, make new friends and help kids and adults alike participate in healthy, social, outdoors activity. Hockey clubs, and the sport of hockey as a whole, are wholly reliant on hardworking volunteers who are committed to making the sport a success for their community, its citizens and their children. There no better way to have fun, help others and enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle than through hockey. So how can you get involved? What Can I Volunteer For?
Volunteers are always needed across a wide range of disciplines and roles, including:
What does it mean to be a volunteer?
Being a volunteer just means that you want to help work on a project or a task without being paid for it. Volunteering is based on the ideal of service -- helping people in your community build a better future, which in the long run will help us all. There are plenty of ways that people in our city volunteer their time, and many of you may be volunteers already. Volunteers in your community may help build houses, serve food in a soup kitchen, work at a local library, in your child’s classroom, in religious organizations or coach, referee, or supervise sports teams. Our association depends on the volunteer leadership of numerous members. We have been fortunate to have capable individuals step forward each year to do their part to help promote and facilitate youth hockey in the greater North Saint Paul area by serving on the NSPAHA Board. These individuals come from a wide variety of backgrounds and bring diverse talents and viewpoints to our Board, but they share a common love for hockey and a common goal of serving the youth in our area. No special qualifications are needed. Even if you can only spare a small amount of your time, your club will be delighted to hear from you. When you volunteer, you give part of yourself–your time, energy, skills and feelings. You give to your family and friends, to your neighbors, to your community. Sometimes, you are giving to people and children you don’t know, but become a viable influence and teacher to them. Volunteering is also a way of saying thank you. It’s a way of recognizing the countless others who, in big ways and small, have made life richer and better through donations of time and effort. But there is more to volunteering than giving. As a volunteer, you also reap personal benefits and enhance your personal growth. Volunteering also includes "self-help." So if you are active in your neighborhood crime watch, your home is protected while you protect your neighbors' homes, too. Adding your effort to the work of others makes everyone's lives better. So now that you are feeling really good about yourself and the time you give volunteering for your schools, community and sports teams, NSPAHA only operates efficiently because of the time that parents like you give to the association and your children. The North St. Paul Area Hockey Association, together with any other non-profit association, club, or organization, is only strong because of the people behind the scenes, who manage them. If we would have to hire people to manage all the jobs that keep this association going, our costs for our kids playing hockey would be prohibited. This coming year (like most years), we will need to replace several Board members who will be stepping down. Our elections will be held in April. Current Board members will be soliciting potential replacements. Regardless of whether you are directly solicited, please consider running for the Board. If you are unable to serve, think about encouraging someone you know to run for the Board. Our election process is open to all members.
